This summer some of our Young Curators worked on a project with Kids in Museums. The teenagers who took part shot and starred in their own film to tell museums 'How I See It'. Archie, one of The Lightbox Young Curators, tells us about the project in this week’s blog, he also took over Twitter for Kids in Museums on the evening of the film’s premiere at Watts Gallery and another of our Young Curators, Jess, took over our account. 

Over the summer, I was lucky enough to take part in a film project backed by Kids In Museums. How I See It is a film made by teenagers from The Lightbox, Watts’ Gallery and the River and Rowing Museum about how we see museums.

As a member of The Lightbox Young Curators, I visited Henley’s River and Rowing Museum and with Tom Barrance, a film maker who kindly let us use his equipment, we learnt film making techniques. We had the opportunity to visit the River ad Rowing Museum and the film we produced will be used as a tool for museum and gallery professionals, explaining what we want from museums.


Once the film was edited and the cover created, we gathered at the beautiful Watts’ Gallery for the premiere. We were privileged to be joined by guests from HLF, Kids In Museums and other Museums. After the film was screened, a number of us made up the panel for a Q & A session. We had some interesting questions thrown at us!

I am really happy with the final result. The film is professional and informative.  It is great that our views have been listened to and are respected.  I really hope museum professionals will consider our views having watched the video. It is also incredibly useful for all of us to see the gallery or museum we attend regularly with fresh eyes, and see what other visitors really think.

Overall, I think the How I See It project benefits both museum staff and us teens, and I’m very pleased with the results.
