Claremont Mansion, Esher

A visit has been arranged for Friends and Non-Friends to visit Claremont Mansion, Esher, on Tuesday 18 July 2017, at 11.00am. The House, built for Lord Clive of India in the 1770s, replaced the original house dating from 1708, built and owned by Sir John Vanbrugh and later the Duke of Newcastle. Capability Brown was responsible for the Palladian mansion which will be the focus of our Group’s visit. Once called a Royal Palace, Princess Charlotte died in childbirth in the mansion resulting in Victoria’s succession to the throne. Queen Victoria was a regular visitor.

The Mansion since 1978 has been Claremont Fan Court School. The mansion has a rich and fascinating history much of which will be explained to us during the guided tour. The building is open to the public only one day a year so the visit is a rare opportunity not to be missed.

People going on the visit are asked to meet in the top car park of the Claremont Estate at 10.45am for an 11.00am start. Once bookings have been made a detailed map will be emailed to each participant. If you can offer or need transport please email Valerie Marsen on valerie.marsen@hotmail.co.uk. The visit is limited to 25 people and booking will be on a first-come, first served basis. When booking please leave a contact telephone number and one for your next of kin.

Refreshment facilities are not available at the School but there is a full café service available in Claremont Gardens near the School and run by the National Trust.
