A visit for Friends to Farley Farm and the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft in East Sussex has been arranged for Thursday 5 October 2017.
Farley Farm was the home of noted photographer Lee Miller and her husband Roland Penrose, a leading Surrealist artist and member of the Sussex Modernism movement. The couple purchased the farm in 1949 and over the next 30 years turned it into a vibrant focal point for artists and writers. They created a major collection of contemporary art which forms the museum now overseen by their son Antony Penrose.
Notable visitors to Farley Farm included Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Jean Miro, Man Ray, Kenneth Armitage and Richard Hamilton. Works of most of these artists will be on display during the guided tour of the Farm. There is also The Gallery and The Sculpture Garden for Friends to visit. A fascinating visit is assured to a national treasure of importance in our art heritage.
Some Friends may recall the enthralling talk in 2012 at The Lightbox given by Antony about his mother and Farley Farm. He is infamous for having bitten Picasso during the artist’s visit to Farley Farm, an incident wonderfully written up in Antony’s book, the Boy who Bit Picasso. It is sure to be on sale in the Farm shop!
Tea and coffee will be available on arrival and after the tour of the Farm, we will be taken to the nearby Six Bells pub where lunch can be purchased. After lunch we will go to the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft.
The Ditchling Museum was founded in 1985 by Hilary and Joanna Bourne to be a home for Sussex works of art. The collection is nationally important and includes works by Eric Gill, Frank Brangwyn, Edmund Johnston, David Jones, Ethel Mairet and Hilary Pepler. Recently refurbished, the Museum is a gem not be to missed. Friends can explore the Museum at their leisure. Tea, coffee and cakes are available.
The visit is limited to 15 Friends and booking will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking can be made online or at The Lightbox Reception. Friends going on the visit are asked to email their telephone number and the number of a next-of-kin to Valerie Marsen at email@example.com.
