John Thornes, Emeritus Professor at the University of Birmingham and world authority on clouds and their representation in art, will lead us through the rich history of clouds in art. Professor Thornes will explore how far Constable understood the workings of the forces of nature, which created his favourite cumulus clouds. He will give examples of his skies over the landscapes of Hampstead Heath, Salisbury and Suffolk. He will compare Constable's skies to those created by other artists and using the science of the weather, date some of Constable’s previously undated cloud studies.
