Royal Grammar School and Abbot's Hospital, Guildford

The RGS is consistently one of the top academic boys’ schools in England. Founded in 1509, the School’s architectural centre has remained virtually unchanged since the early 16th century. The outstanding Tudor school house at the top of the High Street dates from the 1580s. The tour of the RGS, starting at 10.30am, will last for about 45 minutes and includes the famous Chained Library which is now the Headmaster’s Study. After the RGS, Friends will walk to the nearby Abbot’s Hospital for coffee and biscuits before a tour of the Hospital lasting an hour. The Hospital was founded in 1619 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, to provide homes for the elderly. The superb façade on the building is Grade 1 listed and is a major landmark in Guildford. An interesting visit is assured.

Friends are asked to find their own way to the RGS, High Street, Guildford, GU1 3BB and meet outside the School at 10.20am. The visit is limited to 18 Friends and booking will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
