A visit to Southside House, 3-4 Woodhayes Road, Wimbledon Common, SW19 4PJ, has been arranged for 10.30am on Wednesday 21 September 2016. Friends will given a guided tour of the house and have access to a fascinating garden featuring interesting waterways and paths. Following tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival, the tour will take about 90 minutes.
The house was built in the 17th century and is Grade 1 listed. It contains collections of art, furniture and historic items amassed by the Pennington Mellor and Munthe families. Kept in a traditional style, the refurbishments of the house over the centuries are in character with the original settings. Damaged by bombs in the Second World War, the house was lovingly restored by Axel Munthe, son of Hilda Pennington-Mellor, and is described by connoisseurs as an unforgettable experience. Friends will hear wonderful stories of the families’ occupation of the house over more than 300 years. A very interesting visit is assured.
The visit is for a minimum of 15 and Friends are asked to make their own way to the house arriving no later than 10.10am. Parking is available in surrounding streets. The Hand in Hand pub is directly opposite the house and offers a good selection for lunch after the visit. Please advise Valerie Marsen by email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you require or can offer transport.
