Join Ian Chatfield, Curator of the Surrey Infantry Museum as he covers the background to the British Army of 1914 and comparable European armies and how the Queen’s and East Surreys progressed from peacetime soldiers through mobilisation and on to meet the Germans near Mons, the subsequent retreat and the defence of Ypres. The talk will also cover the embodiment of the Territorials, their leaving for India and the beginning of the mass recruitment of the Citizen Army.
