Iona MacKenzie Laycock

Iona has a Degree in Textiles from Leeds University and a Postgraduate qualification from Huddersfield Polytechnic, which led onto her working in the Textile industry in Yorkshire.

She has developed her own unique way of working in textiles, combing wool fibres and painted fabrics, building up layer upon layer.

“Wherever I travel I am inspired by colour and textures, although I make sketches and translate what I see into my own unique way of working.”

During a period of development a few years ago, Iona visited New Zealand. The country’s immense landscape and the quality of light led to a new body of work which was exhibited at New Zealand House in London and Clandon Park, National Trust property.

Last August Iona fulfilled a long time dream to visit Monet's Garden at Giverny; she spent an afternoon sketching by the Water Lilly Pond.

"The water has so many layers of colour, reflections from above - the sky and clouds, the colours of the surrounding flowers and vegetation and also the water lilies casting reflections. Sometimes it’s hard to pick the reflections from reality."

Iona is now based in the Surrey Hills and draws on her environment for inspiration.
