In connection with The Lightbox Literary Festival in April, our Heritage Volunteers have assembled this display showcasing literary authors who have Woking links. Many made their homes in Woking either before or since they were established as authors, notably John Donne, HG Wells, Robert Bolt, John Braine and Hilary Mantel.

Others found the rhyming possibilities of the name Woking to make it feature briefly in verse or songs, while Wells destroyed the town brutally in his science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. For many authors, their only connection was to be buried in Brookwood Cemetery or cremated at Woking crematorium, and only the most important of these are highlighted.

See the display outside our permanent local history museum Woking's Story until 21 May 2017.
