Florence Bigland and her ship owner husband Ernest Bigland (1851-1942) lived at Scote Howe (now Allen Lodge) on Hook Heath. Florence was his second wife, having married in 1922 and she had a very full and interesting life. When she sailed to Canada, via New York in 1919, she described herself as an author, however, this was just one her many talents. She was also a singer, painter and aviator with a serious interest in horticulture and had been a nurse in France during the Great War. In 1934 she was chosen to be Woking's Carnival Queen.
