The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment
Oral History
The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment can trace its origins back to the time of Charles II.
The regiment that later became The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey) was first set up in 1661 to defend Tangier, which Charles II had acquired as part of Queen Catherine of Braganza’s dowry. The forerunners of the East Surrey Regiment were first established in 1702. These two infantry regiments were brought together in 1959 to become The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment.
In 1966 this new regiment was itself amalgamated with the three other remaining regiments of the Home Counties Brigade to form The Queen’s Regiment.
