Centrepiece: An arts project for students and teachers
Closing date: 19 June 2011

In celebration of London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, there is an opportunity for schools to participate in ‘Centrepiece’; an exciting art project whereby works are to be selected to exhibit at The Lightbox gallery and museum.

The Lightbox and Mayford DFAS (Decorative and Fine Arts Society) will be working with local schools to create original works of art inspired by a sculpture of ‘Atalanta’ by Leon Underwood from The Ingram Collection of British Modern Art.

In Greek mythology Atalanta was known for her speed as a runner and strength as a wrestler, resistant to marrying, she finally agreed to marry any man that could beat her in a foot race. With the unconventional help of the goddess of love; Aphrodite, a suitor; Melanion managed to win the contest, who was then married to Atalanta.

Schools from Woking, Guildford, Surrey Heath, Runnymede and Elmbridge boroughs are invited to complete an application form and selected schools will take part in a training day at The Lightbox in the Autumn Term. Teachers will be able to see ‘Atalanta’ and work with the Education team and an artist to give them inspiration for classroom activities with their students.  Teachers will then work with their students in their schools to create original works inspired by ‘Atalanta’.

How works are to be portrayed is entirely open to interpretation and could range from techniques such as drawing, sculpture and mosaic, to poetry, dance or a play.  One piece per school will then be displayed alongside the sculpture of ‘Atalanta’ at The Lightbox.

If you know of a school that may be interested in participating in this unique 2012 Olympics inspired art project, then ask them to get involved by sending an email to education@thelightbox.org.uk with the subject title ‘Centrepiece’ including their name and school’s contact details. Applications must be returned by 19 June and there is a nominal charge of £60 for schools selected to participate in the project.

This project has also been funded by the Ernest Cook Trust.
