Join in the search for the subjects of these portraits
Exhibition: Kamagurka- Is it you?

Dates: 22 March – 24 April

The Lightbox gallery and museum has launched an intriguing photography competition with a difference. The competition involves entrants submitting photographs of someone they know (perhaps a family member or friend), who resembles someone in a set of portraits on display at the gallery.

In contrast to conventional portraits where the subject is studied and then painted, the Belgian artist; Kamagurka creates his portraits from his imagination and poses the question ‘Is it you?’ The person that is found to have the best likeness to the portrait is declared the subject.

Kamagurka was born in the town of Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast in 1956. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Gent. Kamagurka began his career as a cartoonist, his work appearing in magazines, newspapers and glossies all over the world. A television and radio presenter, Kamagurka has written children’s books, a play and has exhibited his paintings in Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The exhibition of 12 portraits, previously on display in the Dutch town of Amstelveen, Woking’s twin town, has been brought to The Lightbox with the support of the Woking Town Twinning Association. The Association promotes understanding about different cultures and lifestyles and encourages the exchange of views and ideas with the three towns twinned with Woking.

Twinning developed after the Second World War when there was a movement to promote friendship and understanding and avert the dangers of hostility between countries. Twinning has spread rapidly, especially in Europe and has helped to promote European integration.

Members of the public have been invited by The Lightbox to join the search should they know someone who resembles one of the portraits, by submitting a photograph by 18 April 2011. A panel will judge the submissions and declare the photograph that bears the most resemblance to one of the portraits the winner, who will receive a family photo shoot and a framed portrait courtesy of Penny Rowling from PR Photography.
