From the Realm of the Dragon: The Ceramic Heritage of Zibo, China
11 October – 11 December 2011
This autumn, The Lightbox gallery and museum, in association with Surrey County Council, will play host to a fascinating collection of oriental ceramics from the Zibo Ceramics Museum in northern China, a collection that has never before been seen in the UK.
From the Realm of the Dragon: The Ceramic Heritage of Zibo, China, opening on 11 October, will chart the historical development of ceramics in China, shedding light on royal dynasties, artistic development and everyday life.
The region of Zibo, located in the Shangdong Province of China, has played a significant role in the history of ceramic production. Ancient China began producing earthenware in the Neolithic period (approximately 10,000 – 2000 BC) and Zibo, which boasts an 8000 year-old kiln, was one of the areas at the centre of the development of Chinese ceramics. Today, the name Zibo is synonymous with high-quality ceramics.
The exhibition, which will offer a unique opportunity to see over 300 ceramic treasures from Zibo, China, will explore a number of key themes:
· Chinese Heritage – Charting the history of ceramics from the Neolithic period to the present day, the exhibition will explore the development of ceramics in China through materials, shape and colour, and focus on how developments in porcelain led to boundless creative possibilities. Shown through accurate ancient replicas and modern works, the exhibition will include some highly significant pieces from Chinese culture, including the beautiful Celadon Lotus Flower Vase from the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420 AD – 589 AD) and the world famous Terracotta warriors from the Qin Dynasty (221 BC – 206BC). The production of ancient pieces is a highly prized art-form in China which continues to keep alive ancient skills and practices.
· The Modern Master - Chinese ceramicists, known as ‘Modern Masters’ are highly respected, they hand decorate even the most delicate porcelain with immense precision and skill. Adding another dimension to the exhibition, a ‘Modern Master’ from Zibo will be giving regular demonstrations, showing how items are hand decorated. The ‘Modern Master’ will be demonstrating the art of decorating and engraving porcelain alongside finished works, during the exhibition at The Lightbox, an experience not to be missed.
· Modern China – Exemplifying the connections between old and new, ceramic table-wear is at the heart of modern Chinese design. To illustrate how ceramics are used in modern China pieces on show will include the exquisite Chinese Dragon, national banquet dinner service, and beautiful contemporary interpretations of traditional designs.
The relationship between east and west has been a source of constant inspiration for the world since the Silk Routes opened almost 3000 years ago. When explorer Marco Polo wrote of the ‘incomparable beauty’ of Chinese porcelain in the 13th Century it was not long before Europe became eager for this magical material. Imported ceramics became big business from the 16th Century onwards, and oriental styles have been a key inspiration behind many modern art movements. From the Realm of the Dragon is a chance to marvel at the beauty and practical expertise which first fascinated Marco Polo centuries ago.
Speaking about the exhibition Marilyn Scott, Director of The Lightbox said, ‘The opportunity to partner with a major ceramics museum in China is a wonderful opportunity for a regional gallery such as ourselves and we are so excited to be bringing a wealth of ceramic history to Surrey’.
Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: ‘It’s a privilege for Surrey to host an exhibition of artefacts that have never been seen before in the UK. Not only is this a chance to see rare art, it’s also an opportunity to build cultural and trade links with a fascinating and economically booming area of the world for the benefit of Surrey and Zibo residents.’
There will be a range of associated events running in conjunction with the exhibition including a ‘Celebrating China’ day, a range of talks, exhibition tours and educational workshops.
