The Lightbox Literary Festival | 20 - 23 April 2017

The inaugural Lightbox Literary Festival 2017 will run from Thursday 20 April – Sunday 23 April 2017, to coincide with World Book Night and the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death on 23 April. The festival promises history, poetry, children's activities, tips on how to make it as an author, and Shakespeare, all packed into one event.

Woking's first literary festival will open on the evening of Thursday 20 April with a book launch by local author and historian Marion Field as she reveals the lesser-known history of the local Surrey area in her new book ‘Secret Woking’ (2017).

During the daytime of Friday 21 April there will be two special family-friendly activities to help encourage young children to develop an interest in reading and literature. At an Under 5’s Painting session little ones will get creative painting their own book cover, followed by Storytelling for Under 5’s with dressing up as book characters!

A special Regency themed evening commemorating the bicentennial of the death of Jane Austen will follow. Our resident chef will create a Regency inspired menu, followed by a screening of the 2005 film version of Pride & Prejudice.

On Saturday 22 April ‘Write Out Loud’ Woking will present a Poetry Lunch with an open mic in Seasons Café. In the afternoon local author Nicola May will give a talk revealing the secrets behind how she become a successful published author of eight women’s contemporary fiction novels.

Sunday 23 April will begin with the talk ‘Shakespeare’s World’. Author of new book ‘Shakespeare in Swahililand’ (2016), Edward Wilson-Lee, will tell the extraordinary stories of how Shakespeare's works found a new home in Africa, among explorers, freed slaves, emperors and independence fighters. The Festival will conclude with a talk by the local bestselling historian and author Alison Weir, who will reveal the fascinating story behind her brand new book ‘Anne Boleyn: A King’s Obsession’.
