Showcasing the diverse range of artistic talent displayed by women in contact with the Criminal Justice System across the county, the exhibition consists of work submitted to the Women’s Support Centre, which is open to all women in Surrey prisons or those in contact with the Criminal Justice System. Participation and achievement in the arts motivates, inspires and helps women to develop the skills needed to lead a more positive life.
This year's theme of ‘In a Land Far Far Away’ is designed to encourage reflection on the artist’s sense of place – whether that is their ‘real’ world or an imaginary or fantasy world elsewhere. Each artist has interpreted the theme in a variety of ways. Some have been inspired by nature and poetry while others chose to depict the juxtaposition between their past lives with the optimism of the future.
This year’s winner in the adult category is the inspiring work ‘Finding Freedom’ by Jenny. This piece uses watercolours to depict a tranquil setting which reflects the peace and happiness the artist is longing to find and keep. The winner of the young women category, Georgia, used her love of elephants in her work ‘Painting for Donna’. Visitors to the exhibition will be given the opportunity to vote for the winner of the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced after the exhibition closes.
