Our philosophy that art has the power to make you feel good means that we try to reach as many people as we can to help boost their wellbeing. While we are closed to the public due to government advice, we're sharing loads of ways to stay creative at home.

"Art for Normals" blogs are aimed at everyone. We want you all to feel good with a bit of art. No artistic knowledge or, dare we say it, talent required!

Equipment needed:

  • Paper – all different colours/patterns
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Something to hang it up with (we used string, but you could use anything you like)

Let's begin.

1. Cut your paper in half lengthways, so that all of the pieces are equal to the width you want the sculpture to be. It doesn't matter what size paper you're using. It’s totally up to you.

2. Get creative by folding and cutting your pieces of paper to make different shapes – you could try this out on newspaper first if you want to try different styles before committing to your finished pieces of paper. We created a concertina fold out of red paper, a curve folding orange paper around a pencil, a feathered piece of blue paper, a cone shape in green and a loop in yellow. Repeat the same folds in another piece of paper the same colour (or different!).

3. Then, start gluing. We started by gluing the yellow pieces together and then glued on the different colours as we went. There are no wrong answers, but whatever you add to one side, repeat on the other to ensure the sculpture is symmetrical.

4. Add a piece of string to the middle of the sculpture, with a knot at one end, before gluing the final two pieces together on top of the string to hide it.

There you go - a really simple way to create something extraordinary! Hang it up and due to the paper’s weight, it will look different again. You can always add more paper if you think it needs it.

You really can create anything you can imagine for this sculpture. Add pieces coming out from different directions, add more patterned pieces or size of pieces. You could make larger ones and smaller ones in all sorts of colours, standing or hanging. Have fun with it and create all kinds of different sculptures.
