Cubism as an art movement was pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque amongst others. Cubist artists aimed to show three-dimensional objects from multiple viewpoints such as from the front, side and above all in the same picture making the features appear fragmented.

Have a go at making your own cubist portrait using drawing, painting and collage techniques.

You will need:

  • Thick paper or card
  • A black pen or pencil if you prefer
  • Patterned/coloured paper
  • A glue stick
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Paint
  • A paintbrush
  • A water pot

Got everything? Let's get started!

Choose whether you are going to do a self-portrait (use a mirror to look at yourself) or pick an image of someone you want to draw. Use your black pen (or you could use a pencil) to draw the face as seen from the front. Keep the lines simple.

Over the top of your first image, draw the same face from the side view.

Cut or rip some of your patterned or coloured paper and glue over parts of your image. Over the top of these draw more facial features to make your image look more fragmented.

Add paint or you could colour in pen to create a bright and colourful cubist portrait. You could add different colours for the different features of the face.

Early Cubism used a muted colour palette of browns and greys whereas later Cubism used bright colours. You could contrast bright colours with muted colours, use muted colours on the whole design or go bright. It is up to you!
