Rangoli are patterns usually drawn on the floor of a home during important festivals such as Diwali to bring good luck. Patterns are often passed down from generation to generation. Designs can be based on nature, geometric shapes or Gods and Goddesses. Rangoli are usually created using coloured rice, coloured sand, powdered quartz or colourful herbs such as turmeric.

In this blog, we will draw a circular repeat pattern based on a flower design.

You will need:

  • Paper
  • A pencil
  • Coloured pens
  • Circular objects of varying sizes

Got everything? Let’s get started:

1. Use your pencil to draw around your circular objects. Put the smallest object in the middle of your page and then add the next largest until you have a series of circles which get increasingly larger.

2. Choose a coloured pen and use it to draw around your smallest circle. Then draw some petal shapes around the edge of the circle.

3. Add a petal shape between each pair of petals.

4. Add a leaf shape between each pair of petals.

5. Add a leaf shape between each pair of leaves.

6. Keep your pattern going with two more rows of petals.

7. Add two more rows of leaves and keep going until you are happy with your design.

8. Colour your design starting from the centre.

9. There you have it! Rub out the pencil marks and your Rangoli inspired pattern is complete.

Next, you can get even more creative. How about doing a few patterns using different colours? Or you could use different shapes instead of petals?
