"Create at Home" crafts are generally aimed at and adaptable for all ages or to participate in as a family, but some crafts may be more age-appropriate than others.

There's just something about nature! Get creative in this slightly more fiddly craft to make your own hanging tree using thin wire and pliers.

You will need:

• Wire (we used about 5 metres of 1mm thick wire) 
• Long nose pliers
• Cutting pliers (or sharp scissors if your wire is quite thin and malleable)
• Cellotape
• An old CD (if you don’t have a CD, any disc-shaped object or thick card will do)

1. Start by cutting a length of wire long enough to go around the circumference of your CD almost twice. Make a circle out of the wire about 1cm smaller than your CD and loop the wire as if beginning to tie a shoelace.

2. Wrap the excess wire around your circle to strengthen the shape.

3. Before you run out of wire, twist the ends together to form a loop for hanging.

4. Next, cut 24 pieces of roughly 20cm-long wire and attach these to the bottom by twisting them around the circle tightly using pliers. Ensure your hanging loop is at the top.

5. Then, gather three of these lengths of wire at one end. Place your pliers 2-3cms up your wire lengths from where they attach to the circle. Moving your hand in a semi-circular motion (as if tightening with a spanner), use your pliers to twist the three lengths of wire together.

Repeat this step with the rest of the 20cm wire lengths until you have eight twisted strands.

6. Cellotape your wire circle to the back of your CD. Don’t put too much on as you will need to remove the tape later.

7. Fold your 8 twisted strands over the front of your CD, bunching them together between your thumb and forefinger. Use your pliers in the same semi-circular motion to twist the strands together approximately 3 times to make a trunk for your tree. 

8. Now it's time to get creative with your branches. You could twist two strands together to make a forked branch. You could twist 3 or 4 together to extend the trunk a bit. It's up to you - after all, every tree is different! Make sure you leave 2cm at the end of each branch.

9. Finally, flip the CD over and attach the ends of your tree branches to the circle. Once they are firmly twisted on you can trim off any excess wire and remove the cellotape. Your CD is now held firmly in place between the roots and the branches.

Hang your wire-wrapped CD in a well-lit window or outside and watch the sun glisten as it moves in the breeze. You could create lots of different trees if you've got more old CDs - perhaps you could even decorate and paint them?
