Joan Miró was a versatile painter, sculptor and ceramicist born in Barcelona. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, but with a personal style. He was notable for his interest in the subconscious mind, reflected sometimes in childlike imagery. His later work consisted mainly of brightly coloured abstract sculpture designed to be placed outdoors.
