Modern portrayals of motherhood by female artists are far removed from traditional images such as the Madonna and child. Today we are presented with giant spiders and candid photographs taken after giving birth. Melanie will compare these representations to imagery of mothers and mother-and-child by male artists. The talk includes works by Mary Cassat, Louise Bourgeois, Barbara Hepworth, Whistler and Lucian Freud among others.
