Art History Talks: Art and Advertising The link between artists and advertising dates back well into the 19th century, famous examples including Millais’ Bubbles and Pears’ Soap. However, it was the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements that greatly strengthened the link. By the 1920s, the list of artists commissioned by companies such as Shell included some of the most recognised artists of the period. As well as gaining popular reputation, artists acquired a welcome income stream.
