Thank you to all of you that took the time to complete the questionnaire and also those that attended the research focus group last month.

There were some fantastic insights within the results that we wanted to share with you all which will also help to provide context to the changes that we will be instating in the next couple of months. We were both honoured and humbled to discover that a large majority of participants agreed that the main reason they became Friends was to provide support to our charity and the work that we do. The results showed:

77% of participants revealed that their main reason for becoming a Friend of The Lightbox was to support the mission of the organisation.
76% sited the annual pass as a ‘Highly Important Benefit’
72% said that they were interested in hearing what their money goes towards supporting
64% would be willing to pay up to £40 for a Friends membership
52% were interested in complimentary Day Passes for friends and family
49% agreed that the Private Views were ‘Highly Important’
46% agreed that the discounts across the Lightbox programmes were ‘Important’
49% agreed that the discounts in the Café and Shop were ‘Important’
12% cited Friends trips as ‘Highly Important’

From the results we are starting to model what the final set of Friends benefits will be when we re-launch in early 2019 and we are delighted to confirm that all the most popular benefits will remain, including;

  • Unlimited free entry to all paid exhibitions
  • Friends discounts across the programme and in the Café and Shop
  • Exclusive invitations to Main Gallery Private Views

Sadly, in the case of Friends Visits, only 7 Friends attended the Painshill Park trip in the summer and the recent Winchester Cathedral trip disappointingly only received 15 bookings. This low demand was also shown in the survey results with only 12% of Friends voting that trips are considered ‘Highly Important’. After careful consideration, as a result of these findings, we will be removing Friends trips from the scheme moving forward, as the demand for these in recent times has not balanced against the costs associated with transportation and in-house resources to deliver them. We do appreciate that this will be a disappointment to the regular trip goers who have long supported this benefit of the Friends scheme and we are sorry that these are no longer sustainable. As a charity we have a duty to run a membership scheme that supports us financially and unfortunately the visits are no longer able to fulfil this function.
