Bradshaw Popham came to Woking in 1895 as curate of Christ Church, Woking & St Paul’s Church, Maybury. Margaret Popham, Bradshaw and wife Mary’s first child, was born in Woking and ‘taught’ her dolls as pupils in a classroom. ‘Pop’, as she was known, became one of England’s foremost educationalists, Head of Jersey College for Girls in 1930, Westonbirt School in 1932 and Principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College in 1937.

In 1954 she was appointed to the new Independent Television Authority although ‘I have never possessed a TV set but I like good plays and Children’s Hour’.
