About the project
Woking's Heritage Collection began in 1993, when several separate collections were brought together for the first time. Since 2007, it has been cared for by The Lightbox Gallery and Museum. What makes it special isn't just that it holds stories of both local and national importance, but that it has been shaped by the Woking community itself.
Some of this special collection is on display in the Woking Story Gallery, but most of it remains in storage, out of sight and hard to access. This project aims to change that, bringing in diverse perspectives to record, research, and share the histories of Woking's communities, past and present.
We'll work closely with our Youth Collective, core volunteers, and a range of community partners to create fresh, relevant interpretations of the Collection. This will ensure it reflects Woking's changing demographic, reaches new audiences, and brings in a new generation of volunteers. Crucially, it will preserve invaluable volunteer knowledge while making Woking's heritage accessible for generations to come.
