On the occasion of our recent exhibitions 'Sophie Ryder: All of Us' and 'Sophie Selects' at The Lightbox, watch an informal discussion with Sophie Ryder and Jo Baring as they explore the combination of influences and interests that inform Sophie Ryder’s artistic practice. From a dedication for making and sculpting on a monumental scale, to family and her animals, this talk provides listeners with a grounding in the world of Sophie Ryder.

Sophie Ryder was the youngest student after JMW Turner to be admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in London. After completing her studies in 1984 Ryder was invited to be Artist in Residence at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 1986. Since graduating, Ryder has shown her work all over the world including major outdoor sculpture exhibitions in the UK, Europe and USA.

Jo Baring is an art historian and curator specialising in Modern British and Contemporary Art. She is Director of The Ingram Collection. A former Director of Christie’s UK, Baring is an author for arts publications and a regular speaker at institutions, art fairs and galleries. She is the co-writer and co-presenter of the podcast Sculpting Lives and editor of Revisiting Modern British Art, published in 2022.
