These animal crowns are so much fun. Once you’ve made one, or two, or three, you can use them to lead your imagination play. What animal characters will you make? We will show you how to make a rabbit, but you could make any animal you like!

You will need:

  • Paper or thin card
  • Pencil
  • Colouring pens or pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Coloured or patterned paper (optional)

Got everything? Let’s get started!

First, measure and draw a line across your paper about 4cm from the edge.

Cut this strip of paper off and set it to one side, you will need it later.

Now measure 4cm up from the edge of the paper again and mark a line in from each side. In the middle of the paper draw a curve up and over, to join back to your line 4cm from the edge. This is the head shape of your animal crown.

Cut along the line you’ve just drawn. Keep the paper from above your shape you will use that for the next step.

Using the spare paper, fold it in half and draw a rabbit ear shape. (Or whatever animal ears you are making) When you cut it out you will have two matching ears.

Cut out your ears and you should now have 4 pieces of paper, two ear shapes, a head shape and a 4cm wide strip of paper.

Now it’s time to decorate your animal crown. Start by drawing your rabbit face onto the head of your crown.

Then glue your ears to the back of the head.

Add some decoration to your ears. We have used patterned paper, but you could colour yours in if you prefer.

Glue your 4cm wide strip of paper to one end of your headpiece.

Then curve the strip of paper round to join the other side in a crown shape. Ask someone to help you measure it to make sure it will fit on your head, then glue it together into a circle.

There you have it! Your crown is ready to wear! Now you’ve learnt how to make a rabbit, why not try some other animals? How about a bear or a mouse? Or create a whole zoo of animals, a giraffe or an elephant maybe. You could use plain paper, or cut fun patterns or images out of magazines to get different textures and colours for your animals.
